If Home Is No Longer Safe

A calm starting point for families facing a sudden elder-care crisis involving an aging parent or loved one.

If you are here, something likely changed quickly.

A fall.
A hospitalization.
A dementia safety incident.
A caregiver who can no longer continue.
This page is for families facing an immediate safety or care disruption—not long-term planning or comparison shopping. This guide is intended for families navigating elder-care decisions in San Jose and Santa Clara County, including the broader South Bay.

No pressure. No obligation. You are always free to speak with other providers, advisors, or professionals at the same time.

This Is Not a Failure

Most families assume these decisions happen gradually. In reality, they often happen suddenly and without preparation.Reaching this point does not mean you waited too long or made the wrong choices. It means circumstances changed. The goal right now is not to make a perfect decision. It is to slow the situation down, restore clarity, and make a safe next step.

Looking at Your Options Does Not Have to Be Overwhelming

In a crisis, marketing is loud, time is short and providers can be confusing. Focus on what actually matters:• Start with one provider. It can be tempting to comparative shop, but this is more like building a friendship than buying an appliance.
• Can you speak with the real leaders, not just the sales process?
(regardless of how it is explained)?
• When you visit, what do you notice with your senses—what you see, hear, and smell?
• Do you sense that you can trust the people who will actually be providing care day to day? Do you like them?
• Don't initially focus on quoted costs as what is advertised and what actually is paid may be very different.
The best outcomes happen when families and providers work as partners—not as customers and vendors.

How Care Is Usually Paid For

This is often confusing in a crisis, so it helps to know the basics early.• Assisted Living and Memory Care are typically paid for using personal savings, retirement income, home proceeds, or family support. Costs are typically not covered by government programs.
• Skilled Nursing may be covered by Medicare, Medi-Cal, or insurance.
• Pricing can be hard to compare as providers have different ways of calculating charges.
Before committing anywhere, ask for:
• The total expected monthly cost (regardless of how they calculate it)
• What is included
• What causes increases
Clarity early prevents rushed decisions that create financial stress later.
